How Neshama Lights Began

Neshama Lights was created by Benjamin Caplan-Bernstein during his senior year at JCHS. His graduating class was preparing for a Holocaust Heritage Trip—beginning in Poland, traveling through Eastern European countries devastated by the Shoah, and concluding in the State of Israel.

The journey is designed to bear witness, preserve memory, and deepen understanding of why a Jewish homeland is essential.

To help raise funds for the trip, Ben wanted to create something meaningful—an idea that would not only support his class but also allow others to perform a mitzvah. Neshama Lights was born from that intention: to honor the memory of victims of the Shoah, especially those who no longer have family to say their name, and to transform remembrance into action.

Each candle carries light, memory, and purpose.
